September 2025 East Coast of Florida Fishing Report

By Capt. Scott Sampson

The fall mullet run is underway in mosquito lagoon/Oak hill and along the beaches and inlet. The run is hit or miss at the moment on the beach with a lot of bigger mullet moving through.

In the lagoons and inshore flats we are fighting the brown algae bloom again. If you can find some clearer water look for the mullet to be running along the mangroves shallow. The water level is up with big northeast wind we had for a few weeks. Snook will be in against the mangroves with them. The reds will be a littler further from the trees on the edge of the grass. Your trout will be on the closest drop off to the shoreline. Free line your mullet in the area and you will hook up. Average reds have been around 24″. Same with the snook. The trout have been in the slot range 15 – 19″.

The beach run of mullet has been hit or miss and size of the mullet has been much larger. Don’t be afraid to use big mullet for those big snook, and occasional shark or Tarpon. A 7-10″ mullet can get snook 30″ and larger and there are plenty of them out there. Leader up for those bigger fish with at least 50 lbs. Ladyfish, Bluefish, jacks, mangrove snapper, mutton snapper, and spanish mackerel are moving with the mullet as well. First thing in the morning can make for some great topwater action. Switch to live bait after that.

Pictured is myself, Capt. Scott Sampson with Hero and Humbled Charters with a 38″ snook caught on a live mullet in Port Canaveral.

Thanks,

Capt. Scott
